We can attempt to teach the things that one might imagine the earth would teach us: silence, humility, holiness, connectedness, courtesy, beauty, celebration, giving, restoration, obligation and wildness.

Drift

What I wore
My reality with you is drifting
we live further in the future
afraid of all the words and lists of now
we drift to separate rooms
we look out separate windows
lonely not knowing how to connect

but we are trying to find that space
in time
in place
here
where we can come together and remember

trying to make solid out of the pieces,
the little islands that we have become
islands in a sea of feelings and influences
not looking for bridges but to change the geography
to slide the plates of our life until a new Pangaea is formed.

A Quite Moments Inspiration

I'm all sorts of inspired right now. I think it's the coming dark which I thrive in that has me settling into creativity again. Shifting from action to reflection. As the winter comes closer I slow down and I see this in my drawing, my images are calmer and simpler. I'm falling in love with simple black and white.

A lot of my inspiration is coming from the changing environment around me but I have also reaching into my past to find new light.

Daphne Taylor especially this one.
Molly Peacock

I have also been finding some inspiration closer to home.

For our fifth anniversary

yes he is a climber 2

How does he keep it white?

Minutes old

This is Kevin...my husband

Eight years ago we met, a blind date and we ended up tree climbing. Five years ago today we were married. I still look forward to seeing you everyday that we are apart. Our life isn't perfect but I wouldn't want to share it with anyone else. I love you Kevin, lets keep creating stories and having adventures.

Where this road is leading us.

First I want to thank everyone who has sent good luck our way.

I know this blog has taken a turn towards the negative lately and that isn't really a fair representation of what most of these changes mean for us. Closing the shop was really a choice that I made because I really wanted to spend more time with Alder on his terms. He wasn't made to hangout all day in a shop. I also felt as if I was missing out on so much by being there.

I was right, the last month has been so powerful. I didn't realize how little time I spent focusing on him when I was with him before. Now we have hours to do things together so when there are errands to be run there isn't the feeling of choosing between doing Alder things or Mama things there is time for both. The changes in him were pretty immediate (although they might be coincidental) he's really talking a communicating a lot with new words every day. Also with all the time we have now we can slow down and he does a lot more for himself. Most importantly there are less tears from him and better sleeping.

There are other changes going on that are wonderful as well. Kevin's decision to refocus his practice into a Community Acupuncture clinic, makes sense both for the area we live in as well as our beliefs. Rather than charging 60+ dollars for a visit he will be charging 15-45 sliding scale. The difference in treatment is that the needling focuses on the arms, legs, ear and face. All points that can be accessed without removing clothing. Patients lay in recliners in a communal room where they are free to stay as long as they want. What is missing from these appointments is the 1/2 hr to hour long conversations. He will still have some slots when people can come for full treatments. The point of this sort of clinic is to make acupuncture accessible to more people regardless of what their insurance will cover.

here's a good article also.

So these changes in our life are scary sounding but they really are bringing us closer to what we value and believe in.

A New Project and Why my husband is so cool

So I've decided that I need a project to work on while I'm at work, something creative but not too messy or consuming. So I picked up a bunch of mirrors and frames to paint. Below is the beginning of my first one. Right now it has a black frame to it but that will change soon. I've never painted with enamel before and it's sort of fun. I was inspired by Graça.

And now for a little story about Kevin and the very nasty weather we have been having this week. It was cold and icy for much of the last week, then this weekend it kept vascilating between warm (above freezing) and raining and cold. So this side of New England became an ice skating rink.

The thing is that it had been fine going over to my cousin's house for dinner. But when we went to leave getting to the car was all icy. But that area is notorious for not being in the best shape. Which is why anyone without four wheel drive parks at the bottom of the hill (like say my cousin Dan). So we happily get in the car and start to go down the driveway. The thing is we're going down the driveway but we aren't driving. No in fact we are sliding and then it happens BUMP we tap Dan's car and we come to a slippery halt.

This means we ended up spending the night at their house. But how is Kevin so cool you ask? Well after we get the three of us back to the house he practically crawls back to the car to make sure it's not in the road and to get anything we might need from it. The next morning he makes his way back to the car and goes over to the cabin (except he has to park a half a mile away and walk on the icy roads) to get our bag and stuff. He did all of that with out me asking, he even changed some rather nasty diapers in the mix.

Did I mention he looked good the whole time, smiling and laughing about things, not getting grumpy or pissed off.

Now if we could only figure out what to do with the piece of the bumper that's dangling a little.

Going Film and Kevin's Hair

I've left my camera to be fixed so for the next few weeks I'm going to use my Pentax to take pictures. We'll just have to see if I still remember anything about shutter speed and focusing. I'll try to get pictures up every few days, or at least some older ones for fun.

I gave Kevin a buzz cut the other day and I am finally getting used to it. When I first met him he had pretty long hair and a goatee. Slowly the hair has gotten shorter and the beard fuller. I'm learning to like it.

Kevin a few years back.

Day 47 (counting mistake before) or Teeth

Yesterday was supposed to be awful. Kevin was supposed to be in a lot of pain and unconscious or out of it for most of the day. That is what everyone said happens after you get your wisdom teeth out. Instead we just had a mellow day of watching dvds and going out for Mexican food. He even studied for a few hours. Today it hurts him more but he still is busy around the house, although he isn't going to go into clinic.

He is one wonderful but truly strange man, on the way home he showed me the baggie that they gave him his teeth in. They were still bloody. I can now say that I have a husband who wants to wear a necklace of his own teeth!

Time to Get Out

Summer is here in Denver which means that it is time to get outside, and preferably up in elevation. Most of the counties around here have a lot of designated open space parks. Alder and I have started to explore them. So far we have been to Mt Falcon, where there were ruins from 'castles', and Walden Ponds a wetlands. There are literally hundreds more for us to explore this summer.

Side note: Kevin past the herbal section of the national acupuncture exam on Saturday!!! Only three more sections and a school exit exam and he's done!!!

A Mellow Day

Yawn... What a wonderfully mellow day. I like when Kevin finishes his exams. I slept in (8:30) then went to the knitting store to get help with a lost pattern and find a new one.

I am finally after ten years of knitting going to make myself a sweater. I figure this my be the only time ever knit one for myself that I spent over an hour choosing a pattern and yarn. I ended up in a wool alpaca mix that is very close to the one in the picture. I can't wait to start it but I have to finish Kevin's sweater first. He's sworn that he is going to keep wearing the same fugly orange acrylic thing his mother got him until his is done (we know what I am doing tonight).

Here is the pattern I chose (from Simply Shetland 2), click on the photo to see it larger.

After lunch we all went for a hike on the Homestead Trail that's up near Eldorado Canyon. This week is the best time to hike there as all the apple trees that are along the trail are in bloom. Even though we had a red air day on the front range the hike was fragrant. We stopped for not great burgers for dinner (not that we could afford it) but had a good time talking about life and watching Alder eat his fish, apple, and anything else we gave him.

Our hope is that once we get the business started we can have more days like this.

A Kevin Love Fest (because he deserves it)

Just some of the reasons why I love my husband

1. How he lets me sleep when Alder gets up early.

2. His homemade pasta.

3. That he decided to come with us in June to visit towns.

4. His support of me as a writer.

5. The way he writes poems to study.

6. The way he curls his body around mine in his sleep.

7. That he stayed up with me for all 22 hours of labor.

8. That he followed me to "the farm" and whisked me away when it got bad.

9. His love of poetry and wine.

10. How he endures my panics.

11. The way he loves the natural world and marvels at it.

12. How he makes up silly songs on the spot.

13. How graceful he can be.

14. How sometimes he is awkward.

15. How he calms me when I am a torrent.

Some days I just feel honored to know him, let alone have his love.

Family Weekend

Our family weekend started with a foggy drive to see Kevin's parents in Salida Saturday night. The picture above is of our hubcaps when we stopped half way there. For being mud and ice covered hubcaps these were beautiful.

It was a full house when we woke up on Sunday, both Kevin's sister and brother with his family were there, ten of us in total.

Everyone except our smaller family unit went to church for Easter service. Kevin said that he felt weird going to a Seder on Tuesday and then a church on Sunday. So we enjoyed a family cuddle on the couch while they were gone.

The rest of the day was a blur of eating watching movies and more eating. My mother in law made so many different foods for brunch and dinner that I never got to taste everything. Not only was there meals but there was also lots of chocolate to be had.

Our niece and nephew had fun setting up easter egg hunts for the adults. The first one was easy but later in the day they did a second one that had all of us down on our hands and knees searching. It occurred to me as we hunted that since they were still small (5 and 8) that the hunt was only half as difficult as it could have been since they only hid the eggs within their reach and not above.

After dinner Kevin's brother and family left and the rest of us went to the hot springs. It is only the second time that Kevin has been swimming with Alder and he would not share. I got him a few times but he was having too much fun with him that I mainly just watched the two of them.

Kevin gets this look come across his face when he is completely engrossed with Alder that fills me to my toes with love for him. It is the same look he had the first night when he held Alder still covered with vermix.

I fall in love again every time I catch him at it.

Family and the Tao

I have that warm content feeling right now that comes from spending the day with my family. The day has sort of slipped by for me but it's been a good one. I like Wednesdays a lot, Kevin is home and the pressure for him to study is less than other days. We've eaten two meals together, and he's cooking dinner right now. We took Alder to the playground where he swung, and slid, and played in the sand. And ate remarkably little of his environment. Kevin was going to take him out for one of his studying walks but the poor boy feel asleep within a block. I guess all this stair climbing and crawling really take it out of him.

Thinking back on the day it hasn't just been family time. I've gotten a lot of our business plan written including creating a comparison chart of some of our potential new homes (in terms of business).

I guess this is just one of those days that happens. I just let things occur as needed there was no rushing or arguing. I hate the saying going with the flow but it's somewhat apt right now, too bad it had to be co-opted from the Taoists. I wish I could remember to follow their philosophies more often. Things really do get done more easily if you aren't pushing too hard on the current of life. Yet another thing that Alder is helping me to see and experience.

Yum I hear sizzling in the kitchen I wonder what Kevin's making?

Day 5: What Falls into Your Lap

While Kevin went off to work on cars with his dad on Saturday Alder and I spent a good chunk of the day at Bongo Billy's Cafe.
<span class=

Where he spent his time crawling around making all sorts of friends while I wrote. It was the first time that I realized that I can write with him there. I have been writing very little lately because I spend most of my time with Alder. Until now I have always looked at writing as something that I needed to be in an isolated environment to do. But I seemed to be writing fine while he was happily babbling to himself and others.

I think I might have been using him as an excuse not to try harder to write more often. But really the brief interruptions of collecting him from places he should not be only allowed my brain to fine tune the next thing I was thinking of putting on the paper. There will be times that he needs more attention and then the writing won't be as easy but I've just opened up a whole lot more time to write in.

So while we were there at Bongo Billy's I noticed a program for a poetry festival. That was going on this weekend right there. Not only at the cafe but at places all over town. Including a reading at the Steam Plant Theater that night. The Sparrows Poetry Festival is a spoken poetry festival that was started in Salida seven years before to break up winter's isolation. I don't know much about it but I liked the poets that we ended up seeing that night.

Going to the theater for a poetry reading was a perfect end to the vacation. Kevin loves poetry and I could tell that he was enjoying himself when he got his special smile on his face that seems to say I know the secret that makes the world go. It was good to be able to include some of his favorite art form in a week of visual arts.

We both agreed that Rhonda Cleaver- McCormick's poems were the ones that we connected to the most. She spoke about family and the spirit of people living on in her. She also had the most engaging style of reading of the poets.

On the opposite side of the poets was Don McIver who was the only real slam poet of the evening. I don't think Kevin had ever actually heard any slam other than on Public Radio. Anyway we both liked his rhythm and style. One of his poems Cool really got me laughing, it was both sides of the seventh grade student teacher divide.

I'm not going to list all the other poets but I will say that they were all good writers and performers. I'm glad that I found that program on the table at the cafe.

Day 1

We drove to Salida to Kevin's parent's house. Kevin and I managed to have a business meeting of sorts while I drove. We talked about everything from goals to marketing. It is hard to think about what niche his practice will have when we do not know where we are moving yet or how many acupuncturists are already in the town but we've talked about some ideas that might make the practice unique enough while also really engaging what ever community we are in.

Forays into Unschooling Thinking

Well were off as soon as we're packed! This will be a thin week for entries but I'll have a whole trip to tell about when I return. I am excited but tired, as Alder got up four times last night.

I'm just finishing organizing all our books it makes me think about how much there is out there that I have not read yet. I kept on thinking of other areas that I want to learn more about. The more I read about unschooling the more I realize that it is what I have been doing since I left school. I've learned so much more since graduating college.

I remember after the first year I Was out here in Colorado I commented to my father that I had learned more in that one year than during the four years of college. I had learned, how to camp alone, outfit a canoe trip, shoot a rifle, downhill ski, tele ski, measure frames for walls, roll joists, do my taxes, set up a rock climbing belay, become intimate with the Southwest Colorado landscape, hitch hike and lots of other things.

In retrospect that year was my year of Deschooling, I was fairly irresponsible and spent a lot of time partying, but after that year I began to explore more things that interest me. I've taught myself so much since then and what I haven't taught myself I found people to help me. All of this was before I really understood about unschooling.

But to get back to the present. Kevin and I talked a lot about unschooling this morning. We had established during our first date that both of us wanted to homeschool our children. I've realized that a lot of our want to unschool Alder is that we ourselves learn best that way and want to have time to enjoy it with him. A big part of our plans for the future have to do with going on adventures, some close by and some far away. One of our main goals with our business is to be able to afford an annual river trip in the spring. Both of us see that a trip like that is a much deeper education than sitting at a desk watching the minute hand move slowly.

A teachers in alternative schools we saw our ideals decay with the constant impositions of the administration and the parents. It was hard to teach in a school where every time a parent read a new educational theory they came to me wanting it implemented. It was the schools policy to take parent's requests seriously, regardless of what was working well with all the children. I liked some of the parents very much but it was often a struggle to balance their needs and continuity in the classroom. Especially when over half the class was partially unschooled. In retrospect the best method I could have used would have been to unschool the three students I had every day. But since I had not been exposed to many of these ideas yet I rallied against them. Now they seem so natural to me, although I am not sure if they belong in a classroom setting with out the entire school being a Free school.

Now seven years since that first date we are already beginning the process. Everyday we watch as Alder explores our world, we've baby proofed the house only removing the truly dangerous items from his reach the rest we let him touch and taste. While he still loves to put things in his mouth he is starting to manipulate them in his hands first.

This morning he pulled himself up to standing at the couch, I had my first fleeting feeling that he is growing up quickly. We never had to show him how it was done or that it was something important. Why should we ever dictate why of his learning. Of course I want him to learn how to read, write and do math but I am more interested in getting him to want to do these things because he is curious enough about something that he sees that these skills are important to figuring things out. I also want him to read because it is a pleasure to get lost in a story. But I want him to do it on his own terms at his own pace not one set for his year and month.

He is part of our lives now I don't really understand the idea of corralling him off in school for six hours a day in the name of learning. The first, and only, time I breached this subject with my Dad so far his only comment was "Why would you want to waste your time? If you want to teach him stuff just spend time on the weekends doing it" If Alder was going to school the last thing I would want to do is take his precious play time away from him.

This could bring on a whole other tangent but Kevin keeps popping in here to see if I'm finished so this is all from now. I'll come back from Santa Fe with pictures and stories.

Valentine's Dinner 1

This year Kevin and I decided to trade making nice dinners for each other as our Valentine's gifts. We thought it was a good way to spend time doing something we love (cooking) for someone we love (each other) and getting to do something we love (eating good food) together. I made my dinner on Saturday night.

From Valentine's m...
The table is set and the candles lit.

From Valentine's m...
Sauteed Shrimp with Saffron Rice (a bit blurry)

From Valentine's m...
Red Snapper Stuffed with Shallots on a bed of Arugula

From Valentine's m...
Strawberries and Blood Orange Slices in Balsamic Vinegar served with a Soft Sheep Cheese

From Valentine's m...
Flourless Chocolate Cake dusted with Coco powder, they had powder sugar hearts on them.

The meal ended with a massage. Mmmm. Somehow I was the one who got the massage. I can't wait to see what Kevin creates.
